Why does Massie need a million dollars?

Based on an independent professional restoration needs assessment, Massie is undertaking a three year capital campaign to raise a million dollars to restore this historic school.

Why does Massie merit restoration?

  • As Georgia’s oldest public school, Massie is the symbol of Savannah’s early commitment to public education.
  • Nationally-acclaimed architect John S. Norris designed the historic structure. 
  • Massie School is listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings and is seeking National Landmark designation.
  • As Savannah’s teaching museum for history and architecture, Massie provides an important education program for students and visitors today.
  • Massie has educated generation of Savannahians since its opening in 1856.

What are the most important restoration needs?

  • Electrical upgrades
  • Elevator for access to 2nd floor
  • Provide ADA restrooms
  • Storm/sanitary separation
  • Foundation repair
  • New HVAC system
  • New exterior ramp
  • Interior resurfacing
