Breaking the Bonds: African Americans in Savannah History
African-Americans have played important roles in Savannah history from its earliest days. This program teaches students about the African-American artisans who built the city’s world-famous National Landmark Historic District, early pioneers in African-American public education, and others. This fourth, fifth, eighth and high school level program is tailored for the direct content of your grade’s standards.

School Days: The Heritage Classroom
School Days gives students the opportunity to step back in time to an authentic nineteenth-century classroom. Students participate in “old school” lessons of reading, writing, arithmetic, and even penmanship using quill pens.

History Lives in Savannah’s Cemeteries
History comes to life in one of Savannah’s historic cemeteries, the resting places of many notable historic figures. Choose from one of the following: Colonial Park Cemetery, offers a chronicle of Savannah’s earliest years. Laurel Grove North Cemetery, the final resting place of many important people from the antebellum and Civil War periods, revisits this era in Savannah’s history. Laurel Grove South is the resting place of Savannah’s African American community, from slavery to such leaders of the Civil Rights Movement as Wesley W. Law.

A River Runs Through It
This tour focuses on the Savannah River’s role in the community, from Oglethorpe’s initial inspection of the river and its forty-foot bluff, to modern shipping and commerce that take place there today, and all of the history in between.
