Breaking the Bonds: African Americans in Savannah History

African-Americans have played important roles in Savannah history from its earliest days. This program teaches students about the African-American artisans who built the city’s world-famous National Landmark Historic District, early pioneers in African-American public education, and others. This fourth, fifth, eighth and high school level program is tailored for the direct content of your grade’s standards.

Savannah’s Liberty Tree

This program utilizes Savannah’s monuments to teach about the American Revolution. Students will visit sites that commemorate Revolutionary events and figures.

History is Monumental

This program utilizes Savannah’s monuments as focal points for local, state, national, and world history.  Teachers may choose from a Revolutionary emphasis, a Civil War emphasis or a combination of the two.  At each stop, students will discuss the importance of the historical figure memorialized, their life, and their contributions.

History Lives in Savannah’s Cemeteries

History comes to life in one of Savannah’s historic cemeteries, the resting places of many notable historic figures. Choose from one of the following: Colonial Park Cemetery, offers a chronicle of Savannah’s earliest years. Laurel Grove North Cemetery, the final resting place of many important people from the antebellum and Civil War periods, revisits this era in Savannah’s history. Laurel Grove South is the resting place of Savannah’s African American community, from slavery to such leaders of the Civil Rights Movement as Wesley W. Law.

A River Runs Through It

This tour focuses on the Savannah River’s role in the community, from Oglethorpe’s initial inspection of the river and its forty-foot bluff, to modern shipping and commerce that take place there today, and all of the history in between.

This exciting program utilizes Savannah’s monuments and historic sites to examine the effects of the Civil War on Savannah and the nation. Students will become acquainted with the events and historical figures of the Civil War.

Native Americans in Coastal Georgia

The land on which today’s Georgians live has been inhabited by people for over 19,000 years, yet settlers arrived from Europe and Africa only a little more than 250 years ago. Who were the people who preceded us? Specifically designed to correlate with eigth grade and high school standards, this program chronicles more than 19,000 years of human habitation in coastal Georgia.. Students also participate in a hands-on archaeology activity.
