Civil War - Virtual Field Trip
Appomattox Court House
Appomattox, Virginia
April 1865

Forced to retreat from the Southern capital of Richmond, Confederate General Robert E. Lee marched his troops westward towards Lynchburg, Virginia, in hopes of meeting up with much needed supply trains.  However near the town of Appomattox, the Union Army under General Grant surrounded the outnumbered and battle weary Confederate Army.  Cut off from his supplies, Lee agreed to meet Grant and discuss terms of surrender.  Meeting at the McLean House in Appomattox on April 9, 1865, General Lee surrendered his Army of Northern Virginia to General Grant. Though the war continued on in other areas of the south until towards the end of May, Lee’s surrender effectively singled the end of most devastating war in American history.
