Vicksburg, Mississippi
July 4, 1863
General Ulysses S. Grant began the siege of Vicksburg, located on the banks of the Mississippi River, on May 18th, 1863. After a prolonged siege, the Confederate Army finally surrendered on July 4, 1863, just one day after the Army of Northern Virginia under Robert E. Lee, lost on the battlefields of Gettysburg. Grant, by capturing Vicksburg, effectively split the Confederacy in half, and led him to be named the commander of all the Union Armies by President Abraham Lincoln.
