Making Reservations…
Reservations may be made by calling 912-201-5070. Please have the following essential information available:
- Teacher's Name
- Name of program to be scheduled
- Grade level of students
- Number of students participating
- Name, mailing address, phone number, and fax number of your school
- Date you would like to schedule a program. We suggest having several alternate dates in case your first choice is unavailable.
Please consider….
- Reservations are taken on a first call basis. Schedule early to ensure preferred dates.
- To reduce transportation costs, two classes can be scheduled on the same morning. Teachers should have the number of students in the group available when calling to schedule a program.
- A 10 student minimum is required.
- Program packages are available at a discount.
- An indoor curriculum or alternate tour plan is designed for most programs in case of inclement weather. (The cemetery programs will be rescheduled in the event of rain.)
- Program fees are waived for teachers and one chaperone required for every ten students. Teachers and chaperones are expected to remain with students and to assist with safety and discipline.
- Be sure to allow enough travel time to arrive ten minutes prior to program start time. Please schedule additional time for bathroom breaks, lunch, and gift shop. If your group arrives late, your program will end at the scheduled time.
- You will receive a program packet prior to your visit. Each packet contains directions to Massie and suggested pre- and post-trip activities. Teachers are expected to prepare students for their visit to Massie School.
Cancellation Policy…
- All programs (with the exception of cemetery programs) take place rain or shine. An indoor curriculum is planned in the event of inclement weather. With a minimum of three weeks notice and available space, we will try to reschedule your group.
- 50% of the program fee is charged for cancellations without at least three weeks notice. A fee of 100% is charged for cancellations made the week of a scheduled program. An invoice for payment will be sent to your school administrator.
Suggestions for a Great Visit to Massie School
- Students should wear easy-to-read name tags.
- Students should wear weather-appropriate clothing with closed-toe shoes comfortable for walking.
- Please identify students with special needs when you make reservations. This allows us to make appropriate accommodations to best serve your students.
- You may bring lunch and eat in Calhoun Square. As the squares are the "front yards" of downtown residents, please make sure you leave the square even cleaner than you found it. This is an exceptional opportunity to book an afternoon program on the day of your visit.
- Please explain to students that Massie's facilities are quite old and require gentle treatment.
Guidelines for Making Your Field Trip a Success
- The programs at Massie are an extension of the classroom and support the curriculum.
- Please explain to your students that Massie Heritage Center is a resource center which collects, preserves, and interprets objects. In most cases, the objects on display are old and fragile, and cannot be touched.
- Teachers, paraprofessionals, and other adults who accompany the students are expected to help Massie professionals in managing the group at all times. For effective supervision and safety, one adult per ten students is recommended.
- Please call Massie if there will be a delay in your arrival time or if your trip must be cancelled. In the event of inclement weather, it may be possible to substitute activities using the architectural displays located in our building.
- Please encourage your students to dress appropriately for walking tours
- Consider bringing a camera on your field trip. The images can be used for post-trip activities, yearbooks, PTSO displays, etc.
- Souvenirs of your visit to Massie are available at our gift shop.
