| Victorian Era
The
Victorian Era exhibit illustrates the architectural
styles of the time period as created by prominent
architects for Savannah. Through the display of photographs
and artifacts, it seeks to evoke an understanding
of the nineteenth century and to impart knowledge
of current efforts to rehabilitate an irreplaceable
heritage. Black and white photographs in this exhibit
are existing buildings. Those in sepia are buildings,
which have been demolished. The large terra-cotta
pieces in the exhibit were taken from the Masonic
temple demolished in 1972 to allow construction of
a new building. Also of interest in this exhibit is
the large round window, taken from Savannah's City
Market which was torn down in 1954 to make w ay for
a parking garage. The Victorian-era porch in this
exhibit is designed to illustrate various stages of
the restoration of a structure. On the left is an
original piece of Victorian carpentry work. The central
section is left unpainted to show that this work can
be done today. The section on the right shows the
porch painted in Victorian colors. In this portion
of the exhibit are pictures of buildings, past and
present, in Savannah's Victorian District, located
just to the south of the National Landmark District.
